What is the best way to keep users from downloading and installing microsoft messenger?
go to the change administrator settings and make everyone a user, then give yourself a password that they don't know and then kick out messenger. They wont be able to change anything without your approval, and don't forget to turn off the computer and reboot it to make sure it has all kicked in
will be a bit of a pain signing in everytime but it keeps things out
Reply:If this is a work situation, you send out a memo regarding the company's policy on downloading unapproved software, including a salary/wage deduction for removal of such software. You have then initial/date and return a copy, they keep a copy. Then you have to enforce it - fairly, across the board. You go thru once a week or whatever and *any* software that has been installed incurs a $20 uninstallation fee, and one 'strike' against them. You need to be upfront about how many strikes they get before their job is in jeapordy. It is not your job to babysit an employee, but to give them rules to work by, and enforce the rules for the benefit of the company and the employees who adhere to them. It isn't easy, but it is fair. The pc's belong to the company, and so does the employee's time while they are 'on the clock'...
Reply:Create user accounts and deny access that way.
Reply:You can create user accounts that do not allow permission to install programs as another user mentioned or you can block the port that MSN Messenger uses on the SonicWall firewall as well. Should be a pretty simple setting change if that is the last thing between the network and the internet connection.
